Human Centered Design
Phase 1: Empathy
Homelessness Simulation
5-7 sentence reflection on what you think it might feel like to be homeless.
Project Lens: Families
5-7 Sentences on what you learned about your project lens in general.
** 2 images connected to your project Lens

Phase 2: Define
7-10 bullet points or sentences which explain your design lens, and define the empathy step you went through (you can use your power point info or your design thinking worksheet)
Write out your problem statement here : Example: Going to school/getting jobs is hard without clean clothing
Phase 3: Ideate
Write 4-5 ideas you had as a team or individually to solve the problem statement above.
Include scaled drawing above. Write out the solution here: example: Portable, compact and easy-to-clean laundry bag
Phase 4: Prototype
Write out the materials you used to make your prototype.
* include Orthographic drawing here
plus what materials the real thing would be made out of.
*** Make sure to include final cost as well as what it was inspired by
- Vinyl is a cheap and naturally waterproof material. Scraps can be collected from furniture re-upholstery stores for free. The bag can have various dimensions so while the ideal size of the Wash-O is 22” by 12” size may vary based on the scrap pieces attained
- Washing liquid container. A small container from travel size bottles found in hotel rooms will be placed in the pocket. These can be collected for free and refilled at any public restroom soap dispenser
- Backpack straps. Repurposed from old backpacks, cost will depend on finding but most likely $2-$5 from used gear stores.
- Washboard. Puckered by heating small pockets into the vinyl. Free
- Buckle closure. From same repurposed backpacks, no need for any additional funds.
- Total cost for Wash-O: $2-$5
- Inspired by the Scrubba at a cost of $79.95

Write out step by step instructions for how to use your prototype

How does the WASH-O work:
- Open up the backpack.
- Add clothes, water and cleaning liquid; which is located in the front pocket and can be refilled from any public bathroom liquid soap dispenser.
- Close and deflate the bag.
- Then rub from the outside for up to 3 minutes; There is an internal washboard made from hard silicone- this functions as well as a laundry machine.
- then just rinse and hang to dry; there is a hang line cord in the front pocket
Phase 5: Test
write 5-7 things (sentences or bullets) that you were told during POL that you want to work on adjusting in your prototype.
Include SketchUP with titles here and final prototype images (please note this is just a quick demo, i expect nicer images, throughout titles and writing)
